National Braggin’ Rights.”

Rules of participation

  1. Firearms are to be traditional Zimmerstutzen rifles only, either front load, muzzle load, or Aytd breech loader, but no modern “turn-bolt.”. Ammunition is limited to a single lead round ball in any of the, traditional, 4mm calibers. Ignition will be 4mm cartridge or percussion cap only. No air rifles or pellet guns are eligible. A description of the firearm used must be included with entry. In effort to start a repository of Zimmerstutzen information, and at the discretion of the entrant, pictures would be appreciated.

  1. Sights will be any traditional style original or reproduction rear sight. Front sight will be limited to traditional original or reproduction post or pin only. No telescopic sights permitted.

  1. Targets will be the traditional International Zimmerstutzen match target only and will be provided by the shooter. These are available on several web sight overseas and locally from Mr. Neal Stepp at I.S.S., 2319 E. Loop 820, N., Fort Worth, TX 76118-7103, phone, 817-595-2090. Correct ammunition is also available from him as he is able to get it.

4. The match will be three (3) shots on each of five (5) targets, total score 150 points. One score submitted per competitor per quarter. It is preferable that the match for record be completed at one session. Targets to be shot and scored IN ORDER, numbered, signed, dated and kept by the entrant. Scoring will be by the shooters on the honor system. No witnesses required. Scores only will be sent to the match coordinator, again, no targets, although, winning targets may be requested by the match coordinator for review . ( And unofficially, if a shooter has an extremely good target, he may send it in for posting and braggin’ rights). Score tallies, at the end of each match will be sent to each entrant, via email (preferred) or USPS. They will, with SPG permission, be posted on this web site (and anywhere else that will let us).

5. Range will be 15 meters or 50 feet indoor or outdoor. No other limitations

6. The match shall be shot in the offhand position only.

  1. There is no time limit.
  2. PLEASE NOTE: Provision of a suitable backstop is imperative. Many do not know, understand or believe the relative power of a Zimmerstutzen. Air gun backers or pellet traps may be damaged by their use. My own personal .22 caliber bullet trap has been damaged by Zimmerstutzen use.

And remember, this match is staged just for having good olde time fun and getting these beautiful old firearms off the shelf, out of the closet and SHOT. Believe me, the guns themselves will love it as much or more than you.

Zimmerstutzen contest at Cody, Wyoming.

April, 2007

A Zimmerstutzen uses a .177 ball and a 4mm cap and is used

for indoor shooting at a distance of 50 feet.

The active part of the barrel is about 8 inches long and the rest of the barrel houses a long firing pin.

To load, you release the lever which uncocks the firing pin and opens the spring loading lever.

A .177 ball is placed in the loading lever chamber closest to the muzzle and a 4mm cap is placed on the opposite end.

The loading lever is then closed and locked in place.

Close the lever, set the set trigger and you're ready to shoot.
